Help regarding PC Mother Boards

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 6, 2009, 2:00 PM
I found out recently that I cant upgrade my processor beyond what I have (and it really sucks at handling complex animated scenes) so I was looking into replacing the whole mother board so I can work on that kind of stuff.

I found this motherboard on dabs.com [link]

it sems to state that it was compatible with my current processor AMD Athlon 64 so that got me thinking that I could replace the motherboard but use the same processor I have allready. Then later on I can replace that with a duel/quad core processor.

Mainly I want to know the following things

Will I require more power from my power box? and is this idea I have even possible?

Depends on the processor. If your Athalon 64 is a Socket AM2 type processor, then it will work with that motherboard. I also have an Athalon 64 processor, but it's a Socket 939 type processor, and can't be used in newer motherboards. You should find the type of motherboard you have and look it up online to see what it is. The name is usually between the first two expansion card slots.

As for the power supply, if it's rated for 400 Watts, you're probably fine. Anything below 350 is probably not enough.

Two things that usually slow down older systems is if you're using on-board video instead of a dedicated video card, or if you have less than one gigabyte of ram.

well, CPU-Z says mine is a Socket AM2 (940) but the power supply thing does raise an interesting question. Right now in my computer I have a 230w power supply so a 400W power supply would have to be another thing to get.

As for my current set up, I have a 512mb video card and 2gb of ram.

with only a 300W power supply you will need something beefier if you plan on upgrading much... personally I have an ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe and its really nice AM2 motherboard. Make sure you check your graphics card if its an AGP or SLI for compatibility Also you will have to make sure your current power supply has the right pin setup for the motherboard you plan on getting... also don't forget some thermal grease when swappin your CPU. ;)

You need to believe in things that aren't true, how else can they become?
:icontyokio:
lol thermal grease would be the last thing I'd want to forget : D My graphics card is a Radeon x1650 512mb PCI-E so I believe thats compatable, plus the power box I'm looking at has a 20+4 pin connector with a P4 4 pin 12v connector which by looking at large scale images of the mother board seems to be the right set up.

Check out his website [link]=pd_google_uk&gclid=CLywlN_LxJsCFYYU4wodGluuDg
It tells you want your computer needs and what is compatible, what it already has, and you can order straight from there.

Why don't we look at this from a different angle; how old is your PC and how thick is your wallet? If you're going to replace your Mobo, PSU, and CPU, why not round out the package? If you go with a CM 690 case, I could share the drive-stealthing technique I used.

My current pc is about 2-3 years old single core with no real compatability with anything. It does turn out that I will have to purchase a new case actually, the one I was going to use has a unusual position for the powerbox which would put it right above the fan of the processor. I'm trying to keep the budget as low as possible, right now my list totals to £118 which includes the motherboard, a 400w power box and a case. I found a nice cheap case for about £13, what is the Cm 690 case like and how much does it cost?

The Coolmaster RC-690 might be out of your price range (if I managed the currency conversion properly). Here's the Newegg page:

If you're going to try and pull some high-end animation stuff, and your computer is that far behind the curve, you might be forced to replace just about everything anyway. When I went from my old system to my current one, I had to drop my card reader and sound card because they used archaic connectors. You might have the same issue with CD drives, and other things.
